Sustainable Perfumes: Bridging Biocatalysis, Art and Consumer Behaviour

In nature, odorants play a primordial role in the survival, communication and evolution of species. As a result, perfumes have been an integral part of societies for millennia. Today, environmental and safety considerations necessitate innovation and transdisciplinary initiatives to address the need for novel, sustainable and safe fragrances that will be embraced by consumers. This project aims to discover novel fragrance ingredients, develop biocatalytic platforms for their efficient and environmentally benign production and utilise in vitro testing for their safety evaluation. Finally, we aim to assess how consumer perceptions and art can play a role in the uptake of these technologies by society.

This project is led by Dr. Freideriki Michailidou and supported by a research fellowship from the Collegium Helveticum, an ETH Institute of Interdisciplinary studies. Aspects of this project are carried out in collaboration with the Consumer Behaviour and Biocommunication groups at ETH.
